Innovation
Corynne Pero, Career Advising and Planning Services
Corynne was chosen for this award because of her innovative response to the challenge of organizing the major diversity events that CAPS holds in conjunction with the Big Ten Plus Consortium. In the nomination letter, Coynne's colleague described how "...Corynne successfully worked with the Big Ten Plus Consortium to coordinate each university's calendar and was able to hold Diversity in the Law and Diversity in Communications on the same day...The combination...was so well received by both students and University staff that this innovation will be continued into future years."
Outstanding Newcomer to the Division
Josh Singh, Student Counseling and Resource Service
This award is given to a staff member who has worked at least 6 months but no more than three years in their current position in the VPDoS Division. Josh has proven himself invaluable since taking a staff position at the Student Resource and Counseling Center this past Fall. He has built bridges to minority groups on campus through targeted outreach and programming, including plans to provide individual and group clinical services at 5710 Woodlawn, the new location of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. He has also helped to expand the group psychotherapy program, offering counseling on topics such as sleep, Internet addiction, relationships and life after the University. Most importantly he has earned the respect and admiration of students and colleagues.
Outstanding Service to Students
Trudi Langendorf, University Community Service Center
Trudi was chosen for this award because of the open and respectful attitude she maintains towards building relationships with students. Coming from a background in the field of social justice, Trudi is a role model, mentor, and friend to the students she works with at the University Community Service Center. The impact that Trudi has had on the lives of the people around her sometimes even leaves students speechless. One student wrote that: "When trying to come up with a more specific way of describing why I am ‘amazed by her', I cannot, because Trudi simply embodies a strength and devotion that can't be written, but is felt by every student she touches."
Outstanding Service to the University Community
JoAnn Creviston, Office of the University Registrar
JoAnn was chosen for this award because of how effectively she works with various constituents in the community which include students, faculty, staff and others in the surrounding community. As commented in her nomination letter, "JoAnn is one of the friendliest and most helpful staff members in the VPDOS division. She is always ready to help with a smile."
Stephen P. Klass "STAR" Award (Service, Teamwork, Attitude, Reliability)
Roberta Cohen, Office of the Vice-President and Dean of Students in the University
STAR stands for Service, Teamwork, Attitude and Reliability. Roberta was chosen for this award because of the many ways she exemplifies each of these characteristics. One example of how Roberta is a STAR is that she brings out the best in the people around her both by setting a positive example and by recognizing others for work well done. As one student commented, ""Roberta is a pleasure to work with because she expresses genuine gratitude."
2006-2007 Winners

Innovation
Natalie Tilghman, Assistant Director - Office of Graduate Affairs
Under Natalie's guidance, the Family Resource Center has grown into a welcoming space on campus where moms and dads can bring children to nurse, change a diaper, or just play. In addition, the Family Resource Center offers a myriad of programmatic elements ranging from puppet shows to musical demonstrations to preschool prep classes to cultural events. These activities serve to enrich the lives of our children, as well as to bring together a community of people with a shared concern for balancing family and school.
Outstanding Newcomer
Robin Graham, Assistant Director - Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
Robin has offered many unique and creative ideas for new initiatives and for ways to solve issues. For example, when faced with multiple requests from internship programs to present to our students, Robin took it upon herself to create a new program in collaboration with CAPS that would allow all of the programs to present to the students at once. Not only was this program a success, but several other internship programs now want to join on the event next year.
Outstanding Service to Students
Ana Vázquez, Deputy Dean of Students and Director - Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
As an advocate for students of color, she also plays the role of mentor to them. One student commented that Ana is "truly invested in hearing what students have to say and thoroughly thinks over their concerns before making any decisions."
Outstanding Service to the University Community
Brian Bock, Facilities Manager - Department of Physical Education and Athletics
Brian's approach to his job equates to his treating the recreational facilities as a small town, where he has invested himself like a "mayor" in getting to personally know many of our members and students by assisting them with their initial introduction to our facilities to helping answer their questions to working to solve facility related issues.
Stephen P. Klass "STAR" Award (Service, Teamwork, Attitude, Reliability)
Deborah Pratt, Administrative Director - Student Counseling and Resource Service
She deals with troubled students who need to be seen immediately, faculty and staff worried about a particular student, parents or friends of troubled students, or just dealing with different departments in the University in a more directly administrative role. She does all of this with an extraordinary grace and patience. We have many busy, difficult days at SCRS. You would not know if we were having one while you are talking to Deb on the phone.
